Did you miss the first celestial event of the year don’t worry there is still plenty to see with ten meteor showers set to come between now and December.

Next is the Lyrids in April, before the Eta Aqaurids in May and Delta Aquarids in July, The Perseids will follow in August, with the Draconids and Orionids in October, then the Taurids and Leonids in November and 2016 will be rounded off by the Geminids and Ursids in December.

The Lyrids: April 22 – 23

The Lyrids are considered to be the oldest known meteor shower, and are named after constellation Lyra. The radiant point of the shower – the point in the sky where the meteors seem to emerge from – lies near the star Vega, one of the brightest stars in the sky during this time of the year.

It is an average shower, usually producing about 20 meteors per hour at its peak, and is produced by dust particles left behind by comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, which was discovered in 1861. The shower runs annually from April 16-25 and peaks this year on the night of the 22nd and morning of the 23rd. These meteors can sometimes produce bright dust trails that last for several seconds, but unfortunately this year the glare from the full moon will block out all but the brightest meteors.
